9th European Geoparks Conference

Lesvos Island (Greece), 1st-5th October 2010

The first day of the Conference - 1st october, friday - was held in the municipal Theatre of Mytilene, in the plenary session

 


 

The room was able to contain the around 350 affiliates to the Conference, in representation of 40 different nations, coming from all the continents.

 


 

The second and third day of the Conference were worthy held by the faculties of Geography and sea Sciences of the university of Mytilene.

A moment of the exposure of dr. Giuseppe Ottria, who illustrated the geologic patrimony of the Apuan Alps and how the regional Park was able, in the years, to protect and promote it.

Again the Apuane Alps Park’s delegation during the excursion to the Petrified Forest Geopark in the Lesvos island.

On the background, the basal part of a huge stem of Sequoia sempervirens, in its original position. The age of the fossil is esteemed to the inferior Miocene (around 20 million years ago).

 

 


 

Prof. Zouros explaining to the partecipants the exceptionality of the fossils finds of the Lesvos’ petrified Forest, where it’s possible to recognize even the paleosoil on which a mixed arboreal formation with prevailing conifers vegetated together with evergreen and deciduous hardwood.

A moment of the visit to the Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest that, together with the Geopark, is located in the western part of the Lesvos island, near Sigri. 

 


 

A cultural moment of the Conference, the visit in the Medieval castle of Mytilene (first Byzantine, then Genoese and finally Ottoman), to enjoy the traditional music performance of "Santouria" ensamble, coming from Anagnostirio of Agiassos. 

 


 

 

During the visit in the volcanic zone of the Lesvos island, toward the twilight, the surprise of finding a mountain skyline (photo sx) so similar to the “Omomorto” (dead man) of our “Pania” (photo dx).
